GOD DOES GOOD WORK. A poet says so. But is a poet thanking God for life someone we should read for the science about when human life begins? That's a challenge with the beautiful but controversial Psalm 139.

ONE OF THE BEST PSALMS of the 150 in the Bible is a psalm that goes wild with thanks to God for taking care of us: Psalm 139.

It’s actually a controversial psalm because some Christians use it to wage a battle against abortion.

Other Christians insist that’s a stretch because the poet doesn’t mention or address the topic, and there’s no indication it was on his mind.

Whether it was or wasn’t, the psalm is poetry—lyrics of a song written perhaps 3,000 years ago.

Some say it’s impossible to miss the writer’s focus on the miracle of life. Others say, it’s not about the science of life, but about the spirit of God in all of our lives.

We often take our opinions to the Bible and tune in to anything that reinforces what we believe. We’ll take science from poetry and news reporting from prophecy, if we like.

But that’s no way to read the Bible.

We read by listening to what it says, in words and context and exaggerated symbols at times.

Psalm 139 is worth a listen on merits apart from the controversy, as a wonderful tribute to God.
