SHORT AND SWEET. Yesterday we launched the Casual English Bible® blog series. You are probably not subscribed. But you can be. And once you are:
- I’ll email you a free copy of one of my favorite 3D-style Bible maps (first week only).
- You’ll be in the running for a free wall-hanging of the Valley of Armageddon. Locals call it Jezreel Valley. Two of these wall hangings exist. One is on my office wall, and staying there.
Sometime in the next few days, I’ll print out the names of the subscribers and ask my three-year-old granddaughter to select the anointed winner. (She’ll be four next week).

Maps, the biggest attraction
To my dismay, the Bible paraphrase is not this site’s main attraction.
It’s the maps.
As a writer, that disappoints me. As the mapmaker, I’ll take it.
When I started this project of paraphrasing the Bible into easy-reading English especially for people new to the Bible or outside the faith, I didn’t plan on maps. They snuck in. I found it too hard to explain the geography behind the Bible stories with words alone. So I played around with creating maps to help readers see what’s going on.
This stuff is hard for a word guy. I had to figure out incredibly geeky cartography software. And as if that wasn’t geeky enough, I had to figure out how to get and use NASA’s elevation data and satellite photos. Then came similar but better data from Europe and Japan. In some cases, I had to buy high-resolution photography from corporations when the resolution wasn’t good enough from the space agencies. Those prices, sky-high.
Pun. For fun.
And rhyming. With good timing.
Time’s up. Peace to you.

Of the 4 coming soon, which do you want to read first or never?
Pauline Butler
I have signed up for the blog. Please put my email address on something pink and shiny and attractive to a 3 year old girl!
Out of the upcoming articles I would most like to read the Surprising Bible Quotes first.
Thank you for your work. I have bought your book The Complete Guide to the Bible a few times! I first looked through it in a bookstore at the airport, and bought it on my return. Since then I’ve bought it for friends and family. I like to refer to it alongside reading the Bible for setting the scene, and the background information. I like the fact that you are aiming your writings at non believers and new Christians. I think Jesus is really smiling about that!

Hi, Pauline. The names will probably be on a sheet of printed paper, but I guess I could highlight it pink. It’s not cheating when you make the rules. However…
Thanks for the kind words about The Complete Guide to the Bible. Royalties from that book, to a major extent, have funded The Casual English Bible. It was supposed to go to my retirement, but I did this thing instead. May the LORD have mercy on me.
You want “Surprising Bible Quotes” first. You got it. It’s in draft mode now. I’ll release it next. At this point, there aren’t many subscribers who will get it. But it will be out there waiting for them.
