Nephew on spin cycle

WIRED. My mom’s great-grandson is an active little fellow. He climbed in the washing machine to take a ride. Photo by Stephen M. Miller.

SOME KIDS come prewired with a little extra energy.

Take the little boy of my niece. Dylan.

He’s the grandson of my little sis. Which makes him the great-grandson of my mom.

Mom takes care of Dylan during the day. He’s not yet old enough to go to school, though he could probably teach the students there a thing or two.

I called Mom yesterday morning to ask her about how her Thanksgiving was shaping up, 800 miles away from me.

We ended up talking about Dylan.

He can open every locked door in her house by using a penny. And he hides pennies so he can unlock the doors when he feels the need.

He broke a Tiffany lamp while jumping on the bed. But that was Mom’s fault. She was playing the song “Yakety Sax.”

He has exhibited remarkable skill at disassembling cookery from Pampered Chef. Which actually came in handy because my mom couldn’t figure out how to adjust the setting. Dylan showed her how. And then some.

One of his most memorable moments so far involves the washing machine.

He climbed inside.

He set the knob on Spin Cycle.

He turned it on.

It left a mark.

Last night I saw that Dylan’s mom posted a picture of him on Facebook.

He was in the ER, with four staples in his head.

I called Mom to see what happened. No answer.

I’m hoping she wasn’t the one who put the staples there.

I write books about the Bible. And I’m trying to keep this blog focused on the Bible and Christianity. So as I’ve considered a Bible verse to link to this story, several come to mind. But I can’t pick a favorite.

What do you think?

A. “Children, do what your parents tell you…so you will live well and have a long life” (Ephesians 6:1, The Message).

B. “Children are God’s best gift….how blessed are you parents, with your quivers full of children! Your enemies don’t stand a chance” (Psalm 127:3-5, The Message).

C. “A young child will put his hand into a nest where poisonous snakes live” (Isaiah 11:8, NIRV).

Ha! I pick “C’! Why? Because I have 16 year old son whose frontal lobe is only partially developed, and therefore, he will take risks and make decisions that leave me with my jaw to the floor! But..it is part of his development…from an evolutionary standpoint, he is testing his limits and his strength. *sigh*
