MY DAUGHTER WHO IS 9 MONTHS PREGNANT told me I need to lose weight.
She sent it in a text message this week.
It happened like this. She and her husband bought me a nice wool coat for winter, in case winter comes this year.
It was a fitted peacoat.
Didn’t fit.
That’s because it fit the way I used to be.
Skinny. Back when I was bigger in the chest and smaller at the waist.
It’s not like that now.
My daughter should be able to relate to that at the moment.
By comparison to her, I look only 6 months pregnant.
When I put the coat on at our family gift exchange last Sunday, and zipped it up like wrapping a sausage, my son-in-law started to sing.
It was a line from the Chris Farley movie, “Tommy Boy.”
“Fat guy in a little coat. Fat guy in a little coat.”
Farley sang that line when he put on David Spade’s small jacket and then stretched out his elbows, splitting the coat right up the backbone.
My 38 regular is getting switched out for a 42 short.
Merry Christmas.
We exchanged the gifts early this year because the Daughter Child is due to deliver the Boy Child on Christmas Day. So we figured she and the rest of the family might be otherwise engaged come Christmastime.
I’m waiting.
For the peacoat, of course. It’s already on its way.
For the Boy Child. My first grandchild, delivered by my first child.
I’ll let you in on a secret.
Here’s why I’m so eager for that day to come. Once my daughter holds that little boy in her arms, she will finally…after all these years…know how much I love her.
She doesn’t know yet. How could she? She can’t know.
But she will. Maybe before I get my peacoat.
Could it be, I wonder, that God knew it would take a Child for us to realize how much he loves us.
I’ll be thinking about that this Christmastime, as I hold a little boy in my arms.
Now, with my son and daughter-in-law due to deliver my first granddaughter by Easter, I have a declaration to make:
As for me and my house, 2016 is The Year of the Diaper.

Next book coming in July
With any luck, by January 1 I’ll be able to let you take a sneak peek inside my next book: A Visual Walk Through Genesis. It’s looking gorgeous. And I think it reads okay, too. But then, you’ll be the judge of that.
