Building a website with my guts

Stephen M. Miller
iPad with Steve's wiebsite
IT’S A NEW WEBSITE. And we’re celebrating by giving away a book a week…and an iPad Air 64GB. I toyed with giving away a Kindle. But when I took a vote among my Facebook readers, the Kindle got only one pity vote.

IT TAKES STOMACH LINING to build a website.

  • Mine.
  • The designer’s.
  • The backend coder’s.

It’s not like making spam casserole from a recipe in a Betty Crocker book.

Well, it could be. That’s if you’re using one of those cookie cutter templates and mashing in a few words and a picture or two.

But if you’re custom-designing a site like the one my design and development team launched on Friday, Betty Crocker’s on a date night with Colonel Sanders.

We started talking about this site several months ago. Over Philly cheesesteak at Pepperjax Grill in Lawrence, Kansas. Go Jayhawks.

Bad ideas weren’t possible there.

Brian White of TriLion is the brains behind the design. He’s an Rteest if I ever met one.

By that, I don’t mean he’s a jerk.

I mean he’s a gifted designer. He sees wonderful stuff in his head and he can bring it to life on a screen.

If you think my new site looks pretty, he’s the reason.

But the site’s gotta work, as well.

It took two coders to pull this off.

The first guy writing the code dropped off the radar. I hope he stays in touch with his mother.

Who knows, maybe he didn’t like the kind of religious stuff I often write.

Or maybe he dozed off while coding an article of mine and fell out of an upstairs window and died.

It could happen.

Right, Eutychus? (Acts 20:9)

The site, for all its mature beauty, might still have an occasional, childlike, ever-so-slight wobble of a walk.

Like a kid with poopy pants.

If one thing goes wrong—and it always does when you launch of a new website—it stinks.

Like the button to the “View all videos,” which didn’t work.

We changed that diaper right away.

A Giveaway: $700 of iPad Air 64GB

Enough about the new site, which I love.

What I really wanted to do today is make sure you knew about the giveaway of an iPad Air 64GB….and one book every week.

To get in the running, you need to subscribe to either my 3-articles-a-week blog or to my quarterly newsletter. They’re both free. You just need a name and an email address.

Once you’re subscribed, you’re automatically in the drawing for one of the free books I’m giving away every week to random subscribers.

Are you feeling random?

Also, once you’re subscribed, if you’ve got a good story about how you’ve seen someone use one of my books, you could win an iPad Air 64GB.

The idea behind the contest isn’t just to help me understand how folks are using my books, though it is partly that. I’m guessing that once I start reading some of your stories, it will affect the way I approach my books in the future.

As I’ve said before, I’m under constant pressure to write in a way that keeps the longtime, tradition-minding Christians feeling comfy. But I’m not convinced I can do that and produce books that also attract folks outside the faith who are curious about the Bible and Christianity. Those folks ask questions that can make old-time religion Christians nervous.

But maybe you’ve got a story that will change my mind. Or maybe you’ll reinforce my preconceived notion. Or maybe you’ll inspire and entertain me. That would be nice.

Read the background about the contest, which has a September 30 deadline.

Then email your story to me.

I’ll wait up for you.
