STEALING KING SAUL’S CORPSE. Philistines hang Saul’s headless body on display in Beth-shan. Israelites from Jabesh grab it at night and bury it under a Jabesh tree.
GOLIATH IS DEAD. So is King Saul. And I’m done paraphrasing the stories of First Samuel and tracking them with new 3D Bible maps.
I thought some of you might be interested in knowing that, and in seeing the newest maps.
Here are a few of the maps, but you can see more in this flipbook. And you can see them all by tapping your way through the 31 chapters of 1 Samuel. They tell the stories of the prophet Samuel, and of Saul (Israel’s first king), and of young David, who gets rich by raiding Israel’s enemies.
New 3D-style maps from 1 Samuel
“When Samuel was off the breastmilk and still young, Hannah took him up to Shiloh. She took sacrificial offerings, too: a three-year-old bull, a bushel of flour, and a wineskin full of wine. There, they slaughtered the bull. Then they took their boy to Eli. Hannah said to Eli, ‘Remember me? I’m the woman you saw praying at the temple. This child is the LORD’s answer to my prayer. I promised to give him back to the LORD, to serve the LORD for the rest of his life.’ They all worshiped the LORD together” (1 Samuel 1:24-27, Casual English Bible®).
“Philistines assembled their armies at Aphek. Israel’s warriors gathered at Jezreel Spring. Philistine rulers led their armies into the camp, marching them in companies of 100 or battalions of 1,000. King Achish’s army from Gath arrived last, with David’s army marching at the rear. Philistine commanders were shocked to see David there, with his men. They said, ‘Are you kidding? Hebrews? What are they doing here? That’s David, one of Saul’s men.’ King Achish said, ‘Not anymore. He’s with me now. He defected over a year ago. And he has never given me any reason to doubt him’” (1 Samuel 29:1-3, Casual English Bible®).
“Philistines attacked Saul’s Israelite army and sent the warriors running for their lives. Many died on Mount Gilboa. Philistines began to overrun King Saul’s position. They killed three of his sons there: Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua. Philistines pushed hard, and soon the archers got Saul in range. They hit him and wounded him badly. Saul told the soldier in charge of his armor and weapons, ‘Finish this. Take your sword and drive it through me. I don’t want pagan Philistines to use me for target practice before they kill me,’ The terrified soldier refused. So, Saul picked up his own sword and fell on it” (1 Samuel 31:1-4, Casual English Bible®).
