From one law—don’t work on the Sabbath—Jewish scholars created hundreds of laws to define work, so people would know what not to do on the “Sabbath day of complete rest,” (Exodus 32:15 NLT). No cooking, great for the ladies (cold meals planned ahead, like a picnic). No lighting a fire, bad news for a winter’s day when the pilot light goes out. Understanding Jesus, p. 145.

As a nurse and the working of shifts, I found that I was always forced to have another day off in the week . In earlier years however, my ex-husband and kids and I tried not to do any cooking on sunday as was the policy in his family for his mother. Verily stringent on the home policy, but not without some flexibility . I rarely ever missed church services, while working nights so as not to miss anything the kids had for activities and to save on babysitting. I find that the burning the candle at both ends is easier, when you have little ones counting on you for their religious growth and experiences. And what a blessed gift of my now ex spouse to not demand to be fed on the sundays. It was never an issue either and his policy. I slept after being up all night and all day and we both enjoyed teaching sunday school. But, sunday was not most of the time my day of rest…but another day was .
